Whitman is bounded on the west by 6th Street, on the east by Front Street, on the south by Bigler Street, and on the north by Snyder Avenue.
Whitman has experienced a large surge of young professionals and students who moved into blocks previously occupied by single families. Whitman has become one of the most desirable neighborhoods for Navy Yard young professionals due to its proximity to the Navy Yard and nearby amenities. The area is largely populated by Irish Catholics, but is also very diverse with a mix of different ethnicities.
One of five original squares planned by city founder William Penn in the late 17th century,
Rittenhouse Square has become widely considered as one of the finest urban public spaces in the United States. The park square is nestled in the middle of Philadelphia’s Center City District, providing an oasis of respite and relaxation amidst the bustling city as well as host to festivals, farmers’ markets, and fairs throughout the year. Once predominantly a daytime destination, Rittenhouse Square is now a popular nightspot as well, with a string of restaurants — including Rouge, Devon, Parc and Barclay Prime — that have sprouted up along the east side of the park on 18th Street.
Rittenhouse Square is easily accessible with two train stations nearby. Suburban Station and Amtrak’s 30th Street Station are a short walk or cab ride away from any neighborhood point. Septa bus stops are located throughout the neighborhood.
